Last week was a WOW week focused on Matariki. To celebrate we went to the museum to learn about Taonga Puoro (Traditional Maori Musical Instruments) and make our own koauau. Most of the class managed to get theirs to play by the end of the week. We also met up with Room 14 where Miss Mason taught us about the tikanga around flax waving. We worked together to create flax flowers. If we had never made them before we had to give them to someone else.

Tree Planting.
Yesterday Room 3 went tree planting at the Whakatu reserve by the airport. There were heaps of different types of trees waiting for us. The man told us how to plant them. First we had to dig a hole that was deep enough. Then we pulled the plant out of the container and we had to tickle the roots. Then we put it into the hole and covered with dirt and stamped it down with our foot. Then we put old wool or carpet around the tree and we put big staples in to keep it secure. This was to help make sure the plant didn't have weeds around it to compete with. We all did about 4 trees each and we got to take home a baby kowhai tree each.
